How to get SLAB working with SMART

monkeys-HOWTOIf i had to name one thing that i sincerely hate about openSUSE, it’d have to be YaST’s package manager with its zypper backend, so, as you may have guessed from the title, i use Smart instead, and i don’t think i’m the only one here..

But alas, it had one major downside - it wasn’t integrated with SLAB’s (SUSE’s gnome main menu) package management feature, which enables you to uninstall or upgrade packages directly from the Application Browser. I still think it was a fair compromise though, anything that kept me from using that sadistic abomination of a package manager has always seemed like a plausible option regardless of the consequences. But that’s about to change, because i had finally came up with a 100% workable hack that will provide a fully integrated smart for SLAB - no compromises!

Disclaimer: I’m not trying to convince anyone to use smart instead of zypper, this howto is merely for people who are already using smart, and would like to get it working with SLAB, although the speed does improve drastically!

My FREE openSUSE 10.3 box has just arrived..

..10 days ago, but i’m too lazy to keep my blog up to date. If you want to know what is in the box or why i got it, go check out this entry on openSUSE news.

more updates and pictures coming later..

How to get your SUSE Box to do octave sounds on shutdown

susemonkeyOne of the things i like most about (gnu/?) linux, other than everything, is how you can get it to do things you never knew you wanted… and that’s what i’m all about, i like to dig down the stuff that creates the WOW-effect, even if it has little or no purpose at all. Being able to convert 8 friends so far, makes me certain that these things really do work on a psychological level.

so this small tutorial can be categorised under CUSYCDWLASBATBAITYFOMGTWALA (Cool Useless Stuff You Can Do With Linux, And Still Be Able To Brag About It To Your Friends, OMG, That Was A Long Acronym)

OK, let’s start..

I don’t know if you can do this under most linux distributions (obviously i haven’t tried), but i can bet you it’s easiest with Yast, the incredible system manager that comes packaged with open/SUSE Linux. so if you are using another distro, you might want to check it out, and tell me how it went. (don’t bother if you are using Ubuntu, i’ll just make fun of you)

I’m gonna lay off the blogging for a little while

geekmonkeyas you probably have noticed (dear random google searchers), i’ve been blogging a day in and a day out for a whole week now, that’s not what i naturally do - i blog once aweek and don’t give a fuck for the rest of the 6 days, maybe that’s why i don’t get as many viewers as i supposed to, that, and the fact that i don’t go whoring for attention by commenting on few random blogs that i don’t find remotely interesting. doesn’t mean i’m not gonna do it anytime soon though, i’m a natural born attention whore really, but sometimes i can fight my urge for attention to maintain some valuable self-respect.

However, this is not why i’m getting a self-granted vacation from an already un-worthy work, well, i just realised i have too many things to do, fun to have, air to breath, books to read, room to clean..etc, i’m not a born geek, i worked hard for this title, so i can’t really spend all my time at home checking mail, IMing, writing blogs, hacking linux, smoking while trying to hide the smell from my mum by farting in the air (just kidding, i use regular air fresheners), waiting for you fuckers to leave comments and generally being a socially-inadequate nerd, it is just not in me, so i’d rather split my time going out with real people and reading some books at home for now.

I’m not going to tell you what books i’m reading now, but i’ll make sure to mention them in later posts or make you a recommendation list, so stay tuned, and subscribe to my RSS on the right –>

notice the new banner? yeah, i’m like into politics and stuff!

hi! =)

Facebook, first impression

keyboardmonkeyi made fun of friends. i called them discourteous names. i said i wouldn’t do it. i’d never even consider it. and i swore oaths to gods i never believed in. Then i did it anyway..

I joined the facebook cult.

first thing i noticed about the site, is how fuckin slow it loads. seriously what the FUCK?

So this is how it happened, I have read about facebook’s web-applications development thing a little while back, but i wasn’t really that interested ’til i started studying PHP, Java, CSS and some SQL myself, and i thought i might as well join in just for the heck of it, i might just learn something useful. (boy was i wrong)

i was surprised to find out that they were working on a wholly different platform (what the fuck is FQL and FBML anyway?), which all seemed much different from what i have learnt so far, or maybe not, but i didn’t really give a fuck at this point.

that is besides the fact that i still need to get a more fundemental idea of what i’m already studying right now before i start screwing around with other systems. guess i’ll have to keep you updated. or maybe not, fuck you!

OK, i’ll stop trying to confuse now..

oh, and i want to thank Eugene McGuinness for his awesome tune, it boosted my hit views dramatically. i got 40 views for two consecutive days. pretty good for a blog that has only 3 posts and a retarded title like “coming out of the monkeys head”, i just hope it’d at least keep around this rate. but it’s unlikely, mostly because my blogs are boring like fuck, or maybe not like “fuck”.. what’s the direct antonym of fuck? (i bet it’s “fuck”!!)

Monsters Under The Bed - best song in 2007?

Eugene McGuinness (a brand new artist) was recently featured on youtube’s homepage for his upcoming single “Monsters Under The Bed”. It didn’t get much of the attention it deserves if you asked me, I mean 50,000 views? c’mon, the song is fuckin amazing!

I couldn’t find the song lyrics anywhere on the web, so with some help from other awesome youtubers, we managed to stick our ears to loud PC speakers and come up with somewhat correct lyrics, here you go:

Why WordPress?

typingmonkeyDisclaimer: this is for the peeps who were wondering why i switched to wordpress, and why assholes like you should do too.

first off, let me clear this out of the way, i’m not a devoted blogger, there might be weeks (months?) between each post, so switching to wordpress doesn’t mean, in any way, that i’m going to write more.

so why switch in the first place?

• WordPress® is open-source, and that automatically makes it FREE (as in freedom, not beer*), i can do anything i want on this blog, from attaching pictures (and actually use them) to blowing up the whole site layout and designing it from scratch (if you are geek enough to know PHP and CSS, and some web-interface design won’t hurt too :P).

• well, umm, that’s it, i don’t know why else would you switch to wordpress? o.0

• ahh, just kiddin, the truth is when you switch to wordpress you get a free beer supply for life, and two weeks vacation in some tropical island near antarctica. HORRRAAY!

lol, no seriously, switch to wordpress, or i’ll kill your mother!

*most overquoted phrase in the whole freakin' world

Hi, i should be studying..

my finals are next week, but i started this blog anyway, i love to waste valuable time like there’s no fuckin tomorrow. anywho, i’ll be pimping this site soon, so watch out.

p.s. i’ll probably be embarrassed of this post later..
